Greetings to Friends Everywhere:
The 116th Annual Session of Wilmington Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends was held from July 12th to 15th, 2007 on the campus of Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio. The theme of the meeting was “Living Stones” drawn from I Peter 2: 4-5.
A pre-Yearly Meeting retreat, held at Quaker Knoll Camp, was led by Jackie Speicher. Scott Latimer, pastor of Fall Creek Friends Meeting, led the morning Bible Meditations which were followed by worship sharing in small groups. Rick Polhamus of Christian Peacemaker Teams delivered the annual Peace Lecture. Tom Poynter spoke at the Sunday morning worship service which was held at the Hugh Heiland Theatre. Daniel DiBiasio, President of Wilmington College hosted a lunch for attendees of the Yearly Meeting.
Lois Hackney, Clerk, presided over the business sessions. Reports were received and approved from Wilmington College, representatives of visiting Quaker organizations, and various Yearly Meeting committees and boards. Major items on the agenda included final approval of Anti-Harassment Policies and Procedures and continuing work on a revision to Wilmington Yearly Meeting’s Faith and Practice. The meeting approved a special minute of appreciation for Oreida Schroeder for her efforts in support of the summer camps at Quaker Knoll.
During a moving Memorial Service, Friends shared their recollections of Yearly Meeting members who had passed away during the year. At the USFW/Quaker Men banquet, John Muhanji, representing Friends United Meeting, challenged Friends with opportunities to serve through Friend’s hospitals, schools and churches in Africa. An offering was received to support that work.
Friends in attendance at the 116th Annual Session of Wilmington Yearly Meeting celebrated our own “living stones” by writing the names of people who influenced our spiritual journeys on stone-shaped pieces of paper. We invite Friends across the world to join us in our celebration of the people who are the stones of Christ’s spiritual house.
